Showing the vital contribution that cooperatives make to the SDGs

In 2016, cooperatives were recognised as an ‘intangible cultural asset’ by UNESCO during the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which took place in Ethiopia, Africa. It is fitting then, that the International Conference on Cooperatives for Development and General Assembly of the ICA is to take place in Africa, in Kigali, Rwanda, from 14-17 October 2019.

The African continent is resilient and an important epicentre for international development. Cooperatives, as value-driven enterprises, carry development in their DNA, and are important stakeholders in the conversation on international development.

We will show cooperatives’ contributions – across various sectors and regions – to sustainable development, including economic, social and environmental. The vital contribution cooperatives make to the SDGs cover each of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, leading to the implementation of policies and programmes that foster the emergence or consolidation of cooperatives around the world.

This global event will be organised by the International Cooperative Alliance under the auspices of the Government of the Republic of Rwanda and with the support of Rwanda’s cooperative movement.
